How far we go, and why arrival times vary

Our coverage is built around one practical question: how quickly can a furnace technician based in central Pittsburgh get to your basement on a cold night? The answer is about 15 to 30 minutes for the inner ring of suburbs below, in normal traffic. That number moves. Pittsburgh is a city of rivers, bridges and tunnels, and a backup at the Fort Pitt, Liberty or Squirrel Hill tunnel can double a drive. Snow on the hills does the same. So we don’t promise an arrival time on this page. When you call, you get an estimate based on where the nearest technician is right now.

The seven towns with their own pages were chosen because most of their houses heat with gas forced-air furnaces. Post-war ranches and split-levels in Penn Hills and Bethel Park, mid-century subdivisions off McKnight Road, pre-war Mt. Lebanon homes converted to furnaces: each page covers what furnaces in that town tend to need, the streets and landmarks we work around, and the questions people there ask most.

Every Pittsburgh neighborhood, too

The City of Pittsburgh is covered in full, from the main furnace repair page rather than one page per neighborhood. That includes Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, Highland Park, Lawrenceville, Bloomfield, Brookline, Beechview, Mt. Washington, Greenfield, Carrick, the North Side and everywhere in between. Many city houses were built before 1940; the ones heated by a furnace often vent into an old brick chimney or run ductwork that was added long after the house was built, and our technicians plan for both.

If your home is heated by a boiler and radiators rather than a furnace and ducts, that’s a different trade. Our sister service, Pittsburgh Boiler & Heating Repair, handles those homes.

The three routes out of the city

North Hills

I-279, Route 28, Route 8 and McKnight Road

Ross Township, Shaler Township and McCandless sit 15 to 30 minutes up the parkway and the Route 8 corridor. The Fort Duquesne and Veterans bridges are the usual choke points leaving the city.

East suburbs

I-376 (the Parkway East), Route 22 and Frankstown Road

Penn Hills and Monroeville are 20 to 30 minutes out. The Squirrel Hill Tunnel is the slow part at rush hour, so evening calls out east can take longer than the mileage suggests.

South Hills

Liberty Tunnel, Route 19 (Washington Road) and Route 88 (Library Road)

Mt. Lebanon is 15 to 20 minutes through the Liberty Tunnel; Bethel Park is 25 to 30. When the tunnel backs up, the West End and Banksville Road routes add time.

Outside this ring, in places like Cranberry Township, Moon, Plum, Greensburg or Washington, call and ask. We’ll tell you honestly whether a technician can reach you in a reasonable time, rather than book a visit that turns into a long wait in the cold.

All seven towns above are in Allegheny County. Inside the ring, give us your street address or ZIP code when you call and we’ll confirm coverage before a technician is dispatched. The same line handles emergency furnace repair on a freezing night and no heat repair during the day, and you get the price before any work starts.
